Guest TdiGalaxy90 Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 rattling noise coming from part with belts on increased revs makes it go?? just started a hour ago Quote
chromedome Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 Sounds like the auxilliary drive belt and the associated tensioner. The tensioner is known to fail, not common to just Galaxy's, but it is advised to change the belt and tensioner at the same time. Quote
Guest TdiGalaxy90 Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 Thanks for the quick reply . Ive just taking the auxilliary drive belt off started the engine and the noise has stopped,so its one of 2 pullys the top pully which i dont know what it for has a warp spin when going round this pully isnt the alt belt nor power steering or air con its the top middle one pretty sure its the one squeaking? Guest TdiGalaxy90 Posted April 4, 2012 Report Posted April 4, 2012 Take it the aux belt is the thin one? thats the one ive taking off and noise went away the i put new belt on and noise back is this the pully and what pully is it for? Quote
alan_131 Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 Shortly after I had all the belts done on mine I had a noise that was there only at idle - very slight revs and it went away. I could see the tensioner moving more at idle too. Eventually found a bolt missing from one of the casting mounts and also the lower casting with the pas pump had a fracture on the little arm that goes across front of engine to stabilise it. I've also read of the alternator pulley siezing - apparently some VW TDI's have a sort of overrun clutch built in. This might be a red herring as I've read about it mostly on American sites re VAG TDI's in general. If you google I'm sure you'll find it and if it applies to us. There is a simple test for this described in the posts Good luck and would be interested to hear what you finally pinned it down to. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 (edited) The alternator clutch pulley is becoming a standard fit on all cars now and can cause shrieking and squealing.Testing clutch pulley, remove drive belt, locate alternator fan blade through opening, hold a screwdriver against fan blade while turning pulley anticlockwise, the pulley should turn smoothly without turning the fan. When you try turning clockwise the pulley will be locked to the shaft there by turning the fan. If the pulley turns the fan in both directions it needs changing. Edited April 7, 2012 by chrispb123456 Quote
